Auburn, Alabama
Building receives LEED Gold certification. This 43,000-square-foot office building is the first in Auburn's 156-acre research park. The building, owned and operated by the Auburn Research and Technology Foundation, is the second building in the state of Alabama to be certified under the LEED Core & Shell requirements. The LEED Gold Certification was attained by integrating many sustainable principles throughout the design and construction stages.
Principles include the orientation of the three-story building (to minimize solar heat gain), the use of recycled and regional materials, the incorporation of energy-efficient HVAC systems and Low-E glazing systems, high-efficiency plumbing fixtures and low emitting VOC materials. The site development not only includes indigenous and water-efficient plant material but also a system of bioswales for stormwater retention. The new Research Park serves as the gateway to the campus, designed to balance economic development while also protecting the natural environment.
