Gresham, Smith and Partners, a leading multi-disciplinary design and consulting firm for the built environment, celebrated Earth Day 2012 with its support of employees' local "green" volunteer efforts. GS&P's longterm commitment to sustainability is evidenced not only by the firm's numerous LEED-certified buildings, environmentally-friendly designs and environmental- and sustainability-focused consulting services, but also by individual and group contributions to charitable organizations and events dedicated to improving the health and sustainability of communities.

GS&P's 2012 Earth Day volunteer contributions include:

Birmingham office employees commemorated Earth Day by using their design skills to participate in the Alabama chapter of The Nature Conservancy's Picnic for the Planet at Railroad Park in downtown Birmingham. GS&P teamed with Wells Fargo Bank to design and decorate a picnic table with an environmental theme to be displayed at the Picnic for the Planet event on Sunday, April 22. The Wells Fargo-sponsored picnic table featuring the GS&P design won the "Most Creative Table" award and will be moved to a permanent location in a Birmingham park after its Earth Day unveiling. Picnic for the Planet is a celebration of the planet we live on, the bounty it provides and the people who work to preserve it.

Columbus employees celebrated Earth Day by participating in several individual "green" volunteer programs. Blair Everett worked at Green Columbus' Earth Day 2012: Root Down celebration on Saturday, April 21. The event honors the many local Columbus volunteers who have volunteered at Earth Day worksites to clean the banks of scenic rivers, plant over 15,000 trees and remove trash from parks and neighborhoods. Blair also serves as a City of Columbus recycling ambassador, speaking to various community groups about the city's new curbside recycling program being rolled out through summer and fall. Additionally, Regan Packowski volunteered with the Columbus Young Professionals at the Kick Butt Columbus event to clean up garbage and cigarette butts from local highway ramps. Mark Ervin and his daughter dedicated time to Pedal Instead, which is a project of Mayor Michael Coleman's Green Team providing community members with free, secure bicycle parking at large community events. Ervin has volunteered with Pedal Instead for more than two years.

Louisville office employees volunteered as clean-up assistants at Shelby Park for the city's Adopt-A-Park program throughout March and April. Shelby Park is GS&P's designated adopted park. The Adopt-A-Park program is designed to get corporate citizens, neighborhood groups, schools, and other community organizations involved in preserving and enhancing the community's 122 parks. Adoption Partners and their members take part in routine volunteer projects such as trash pick-up and graffiti removal and may also assist with larger special projects such as mulching, plantings, bench construction, painting and other work. Louisville employees will also participate in River Sweep 2012, an annual riverbank cleanup for the Ohio River and its tributaries. River Sweep 2012 is sponsored by the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO).
