Employees Reinforce Commitment to Social Responsibility Through Community Events
Nashville, Tenn. - Jul 06, 2010

Nashville, Tenn. – July 6, 2010 – Gresham, Smith and Partners, a leading multi-disciplinary design and consulting firm to the built environment, is proud of its employees' support of a variety of industry and community initiatives.  Reinforcing the firm's commitment to social responsibility, staff members from various offices have participated in several recent activities.

"GS&P has a long standing commitment to giving back to the communities in which we live and work," commented James Bearden, AIA, chief executive officer, Gresham, Smith and Partners. "From professional to civic and charitable organizations, involvement in the community provides our employees opportunity for both personal and professional growth. We encourage our employees to become an active part of their community and support their efforts to make a difference in a variety of ways."

• Dallas office employees volunteered to participate with the Emerging Green Builders of the North Texas USGBC chapter for the 2nd annual Historic Green.  The Chapter provided funds for members to attend the event in which, for two weeks in March, hundreds of students and young professionals converged on New Orleans – bringing their energy and ideas to help the people of the Lower 9th Ward of Katrina ravaged New Orleans revitalize their community. Architects, engineers, planners, landscape architects, interior designers and contractors worked hand in hand with neighborhood residents on their historic houses, parks, playgrounds and community centers.

• United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) Casual Day helps to get the word out about UCP programs and services that are available for people with disabilities, including cerebral palsy (CP). Employees may make donations of $5 or $20 to participate and receive the traditional Casual Day button, t-shirt and other promotional items provided by sponsors. The Nashville office has participated in United UCP Casual Day since 2002 and will do so again on June 25, 2010.

• On May 1 and 2, 2010, Nashville, Tennessee and surrounding counties were devastated by floods. Volunteers from GS&P helped the United Way distribute personal care items, cleaning supplies and water to three organizations in the community serving as distribution centers as FEMA was closing down their emergency shelters. In addition, GS&P volunteers helped their fellow employees who have been affected by the flood with recovery efforts at their homes.

• The Tampa office participated in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) walk on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at Fort DeSoto Park in St. Petersburg, Florida. The JDRF walk drew people together in a healthy activity to raise money to help find a cure for diabetes. It was fun for GS&P families and built camaraderie among employees who came together to support a worthy cause.

• On Friday, April 13, 2010, Tampa office employees participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life on Davis Island. The event raised $62,000 to fund the many services and programs that directly benefit cancer patients and their caregivers in the community.

GS&P has a charitable contribution committee in place called GIVE (Gresham, Smith and Partners’ Individual Volunteer Empowerment) to oversee and direct expenditures which enable the firm to focus its volunteer efforts and giving in a manner that provides the greatest impact. The GIVE committee helps to further GS&P's belief in the power of the individual to make a difference in the community.
