New gateway to Auburn University. Sitting on nearly 20 acres at the gateway of Auburn University is the new 39,000 sq ft Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art. Opening in October 2003, the museum contains a 125-seat auditorium/theater and eight exhibition galleries for paintings, sculptures; a permanent collection of American Art from the 1940s and 1950s and a permanent collection of Audubon prints; a café and museum shop.
Public spaces open onto a large terrace overlooking a three-acre lake. Surrounding the museum are formal gardens designed in the classical European style, encompasses 15 acres. The site includes walking trails, a lake and a formal garden area for the exhibition of monumental sculpture. The entire museum is accompanied by custom signage designed to compliment the interior aesthetics as well to assist in guiding all foot traffic to their desired locals.
This project received the 2005 First Place Gold Award from the International Interior Design Association.
